profane horrors

As New York City prepares for the 45th Annual Village Halloween Parade, we cannot help but draw parallels between this showy shindig and impending elections.

Halloween originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.

Would that we could ward off the evils of today's world with such beliefs. Burn, baby, burn.

In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain.

Christian or pagan, what have we waged for the love of our beliefs and religions?

Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating sweet treats.

Around the world, politics [not just in the US] has devolved into a Punch and Judy show.

Soon we will have the chance to correct the state of affairs in our nation. Let us hope we do and earn just cause to celebrate a better grade of humanity for us all. Unmasked and authentic.
