blood & gore

We Filipinos have been influenced by our Asian neighbors. Colonized for hundreds of years under the yoke of Spain. Occupied by the US and obsessed with all things American.

As mixed Chinese and Spanish mestizos with bloodlines and lineages still coursing through us - we are torn between the love that birthed us and the curse of our colonizers.

We reach past the birth of our nation. way back in time. Past our local creation narratives, imagining what might have been. To the spontaneous combustion that brought forth this land from the depths of our ranging seas.

Our heritage and history are long lost and largely mis-remembered or retold. Burned and buried in chaos and upheavals - natural or man-made. Attached to their loss or indifferent and ignorant, we hold these painful memories in our genes.

With a new generation of fascists on the rise in too many parts of the world, many protected by government clout and influence even - amnesty is declared over mass graves of countless genocides.

It is simpler for current leaders and legislation to sweep it under the rug in a haze of selective amnesia because if the truth were told no one could afford the cost of reparation.

None of these past atrocities can ever be undone but the fact that we sit and wait hoping enough time will pass to distance ourselves from it is counter productive and fatal for our future.

Forgive? Yes. Forget? No.

birthday's are the best

I just celebrated my birthday. This year was different. I did not unplug as usual to go on retreat.

Because my sister thought I was turning 60 we ended up booked for my birthday dinner at Asiate - Mandarin Hotel's fine dining aerie restaurant in New York City - overlooking Central Park and Columbus Circle

Birthdays are the best! A new beginning, the cycle of life completing its circuit of 365 days. The unique and special life stream of an individual and the world of experiences created, circling close at each year's end.

celebrating siblings

I found myself
sitting up in my cavernous crib
chasing motes through shafts
of sunbeam and shadow.

This is the temple
of my childhood
where I came into being
with family who welcome me home.

I belong to this life
alone and involved
in this togetherness of
long lasting bonds among siblings.

There is no home
but the heart of belonging
here in the sisterhood and brotherhood
of the world we made to be free in.

mothers on my mind

"Mary is a girl gang leader in Heaven. She is fuerte - strong, fierce. We have been given this cleaned-up, Anglicized version of her. But the saints had calluses on their hands." ~ Clarissa Pinkola Estes

I used to believe my mommy issues were unique unto me. Once I heard others talk of theirs, I realized how myopic and self centered my perspective was.

September is ruled by Virgo - the Goddess of Life. As the month brings in the bounty of the harvest - we each give birth to our unique purpose. What have you given birth to this year? How have you changed since this time last year?

Are you confused with all the change that went on or have you moved through confusion to clarity? Do you belong to yourself? Are you true to yourself and your vision? If so, name yourself to know yourself.

Each sign poses us questions about life. Virgo’s most important question is ‘Do you know who you are?’
